Your final thoughts of the entire book study

John Dewey described reflection as the “active, persistent, and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in light of the grounds that support.” The reflective practitioner examines his/her assumptions about students, subject matter, learning theory and techniques, the context, and his/her core beliefs in order to learn and grow his/her teaching practice. Reflection is recursive; reflection gives rise to action, which in turn leads back to reflection.
Reflect on the entire book study. Post what you learned or if you learned something you can apply in your class.

  1. This book is an awesome tool to add to my resources. I really like reading the students’ perspective of school and how caring teachers influenced them to change their outlook on their educational experience. Building relationships with students is the key to getting students to do their best. As I reflect on the information shared in the text, I will continue to sharpen my teaching tools and “smile”…as it is contagious.

Teaching is one of the most wonderful and rewarding professions a person can choose. Teaching is a career choice for those who are not in the profession for the money. As new teachers discover every year, there are no two days alike, and there are definitely no two students alike. One major challenge teachers are faced with is to familiarize themselves with every child's unique learning ability. We are trained to teach students, not subjects. "Do You Know Enough About Me To Teach Me?" is an excellent book. The four students in this book have different outlooks on life and school, but in the end are each trying to reach their full academic potential. Each story really opened my eyes to how I am perceived as a teacher, and how much my actions depend on the success of my classroom. Too often, we can become overwhelmed with deadlines, test scores, and paperwork. We must reflect daily on what result we hope to attain, so we can direct and encourage each student to be successful. A teacher's success is not based on what she is paid, but by the impact she has on each and every child. Education is one gift no one can ever take from you. Teachers are on the front and center stage daily. They not only teach academics, but they teach life lessons by wisdom and example. As teachers we are always being studied. When I become frustrated, I think of one small detail that always helps to calm me. Four years or forty years from now, you will always be remembered as someone's teacher. Did you open new doors for a child's academic ability, or did you let them stand there knocking?
REMEMBER....."A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark." Be the type of teacher who leaves the brightest and most defined mark with each child.

  3. I think this was a very good book to read and use as a guide to make improvements in my teaching skills. I also think this is a book that more schools should read as a whole and use as well in their teaching skills. I do believe this book would be a greater service to middle and high school teahcers. The book study itself was also great. I enjoyed hearing what all the other teachers had to say during the meets and as well as reading everyone comments on line as well.

  4. I really enjoyed the book study! I think that it was insightful and a good way to interact with each other. We are here everyday but all in our separate classes and pods and do not get to discuss much. It was interesting to get to know the people we work with. I enjoyed it. I did not always get to read each comment for each chapter but I will go back and read them. I personally enjoyed it.

  5. This was an adventure! I've never participated in a book study, nor a blog before this one. I will reread this the highlighted portions of this book often. I've tried some of the author's suggestions and they really work in the classroom!

  7. I really enjoyed the book, it has a few pointers that I will always keep in mind. This was the first online book study I have ever done, due to the fact that technology and I do not really mix, I would have to say that I will always perfer it old school(written work). As far as the information in the book and the way we discussed it in class I did enjoy that. I also enjoyed listening to and reading the different point of views everyone had.

  8. Well.......let's see. This is the first book study I have done on line. I found the book extremely easy to read. I would have liked it better if it had went further into the lives and trials of the few student cases listed. I think it would be interesting if we could find a book dealing with elementary students instead of high school. All in all, I found it interesting and I enjoyed reading my peers views.

  10. This book study has been an excellent experience. I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments and thoughts on the book.
The book itself is outstanding. It points out how important teacher-student relationships are to learning. We must truly capture our students to inspire and teach them.
High school is very different from the kindergarten students I teach but the basic concepts and strategies still apply.

  11. This book study was very interesting. It made me more aware of how children look at their teachers and need to feel loved. For some children, school is the only place where they get support and nurturing from adults. It also had many valid points on earning and keeping the respect of your students and strategies on teaching your students.

  12. I enjoyed reading this book. I can always refer to it, and read it at the beginning of each school year to refresh. It gave thoughts and inputs from students about how they felt about education, and the teachers at their school. This was a good way of starting the book. Even though the book applied to youth, there are a lot of students at the elementary level that have similiar thoughts. It is important to help fulfill the needs of our students. That's what we're here for.

  13. The book was easy to read and I saw former students in the descriptions. I agree that it would have been better to have more things about elementary students but according to each of the students the elementary teachers did a good job. I have taught 6th grade and know how difficult it is for the transistion between elementary and middle school. I did enjoy chapter 10 and think it is a part that I will reread.

This book study reminded me when i was in college a year ago turning in assignments for class. The only thing different now is that I graduated and some parts of the book can be incorporated in my teaching experience. Although this book seemed more towards middle school, there are still some basic techniques that can be used. This book was not just stating what the author felt, but also the students honest opinions which I found interesting.

  15. I enjoyed reading what others had to say. That's what makes this kind of book study interesting. Some points Mr. Peters made validated my teaching methods; some gave me new ideas and techniques to use. I was able to step back and evaluate my own teaching. This is a book that I can refer to any time.

  16. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a very easy read, and it was nice to know how students felt about there school experience and their teachers. Most times you only hear about how the teacher feels so this book had a nice twist to it. This book not only gave the student perspective but it gave strategies on how to handle different situations that may occur.

  17. The book and the study were both productive and informative. Many of the key principles of education and strategies discussed most teachers are aware of. However, there were many inspiring new points identified and enriched with group discussion. Overall I enjoyed the study and walked away with more constructive knowledge.
